The tour of Acco involves all the senses and incorporates picturesque alleyways, halls where knights used to roam, a colorful and authentic open air market (shuk), ancient bathhouses and quaint synagogues. The city of Acco went through many transformations over the centuries. It was once under Muslim rule, then was ruled by the Crusaders, and was then under Muslim rule again for four years until it was reconquered by the Crusaders. In this period (1191) Acco was the Crusader capital and the most important port in the region.
Today the port is active as a small fishing port. It is worthwhile to explore the old city of Acco on foot; so park your car at the public parking lot at the entrance to the old city. It is recommended to buy tickets in advance and to pay extra for an audio guide which can explain many features of the old city and help you understand more about the sites. The Knights' Hall was built in 1191, after the Crusaders reconquered Acco. But they did not succeed in conquering Jerusalem from the Muslims, and therefore they established Acco as their capital. They built a luxurious complex structure which included a citadel, a surrounding wall and a series of halls used by the Hospitallers Knights. These buildings have been excavated along with a dungeon, a dining hall and an ancient Gothic church.
Medieval European remains include the Church of Saint George and adjacent houses at the Genovese Square (Kikar Genoa). There were also residential quarters and marketplaces run by merchants from Pisa and Amalfi in Crusader and medieval Acco. There is an ancient aqueduct system and recent excavations have found evidence that a port existed here more than two thousand years ago. The citadel was later used as an Ottoman fortification, built on the foundation of the Hospitallerian citadel. There are also Bahíç'í_ holy places in Acco, dating from Bahíç'u'llíçh's imprisonment in the citadel during Ottoman Rule. These include the Bahai shrine and the Bahai mansion.
In the 20th century the citadel was used as a prison. During the time of the British mandate, Zionist resistance fighters were imprisoned and some were executed here. The citadel is well worth a visit. When you leave the citadel follow the sign to "Hamam al Basha", to see the Turkish bathhouse built in 1795 by the Ottoman Jezza Pasha with its steam room and marble fountain. The bathhouse operated until 1950. It served as a bridge used by the Irgun during British rule to break into the citadel's prison. There are two important Jewish sites

במקום גם "מוזיאון אסירי המחתרות" בתוככי כלא זה ישבו אסירי המחתרות [ההגנה, אצ"ל ולח"י] שנעצרו בידי הבריטים בימי המאבק להקמת מדינת ישראל, כאן ניתן גם לבקר "בחדר הגרדום" בו הוצאו להורג בתליה תשעה יהודים חברי המחתרות ע"י הבריטים מהמצודה הטמפלרית בצידה המערבי נחצבה מנהרה עד לנמל העיר במזרח - מנהרה זו שימשה כמעבר תת קרקעי אסטרטגי שחיבר את הארמון עם הנמל, כדאי ומומלץ לבקש במנהרה. כשנצא ממתחם האבירים נפנה עם השילוט "לחמאם אל - פאשה" זה חמאם תורכי משופץ מלפני כ - 200 שנה וכדאי לבקר בו. מכאן תוך מספר דקות אנחנו בתוך השוק הסגנוני והאותנטי של עכו שיוביל אותנו אל נמל עכו המקסים. בצידו הדרומי של השוק מצויים 2 אתרים יהודים חשובים. 1. ביתו של חיים פרחי שהיה שר האוצר ויד ימינו של השליט המוסלמי "אחמד אל ג'אזר" במאות ה -18-19 [עד שלבסוף הרג אותו השליט האכזרי]. 2. בית הכנסת הרמח"ל. הרמח"ל חי בעכו בשנים 1743-1747 ובית הכנסת היום נבנה לפני כ - 200 שנה ע"ש הרמח"ל.
ביקור נוסף חובה בעכו [מחוץ לעיר העתיקה] הוא בביצ הכנסת התוניסאי "אור תורה" בית כנסת זה מפורסם בעולם כולו בגלל עבודות המוזיאקה המרהיבות. המכילות מאות מליוני אבנים טבעיות ובעבודת הויטראז' המרהיבה.
