Abaye North, Amuka

Abbaye was a famous Amora (Talmud era sage) who is most oven known for arguing with his friend Rava throughout the Talmud. He and Rava are aptly buried near each other, as together they created the dialectic form of study used to understand Jewish laws. Abaye lost his parents at an early age. He was raised by his uncle and succeeded as head of the Yeshiva in Pumpedeisa.

Rabbi Chaim Vital wrote in the name of the Holy Ari that Abaye is buried in a cave in Ovnit along with Rava and Rav Dimi. This location was felt by later scholars to be located inside an army base. The grave was sealed during construction of the base. Although the cave itself is inaccessible, there is a point outside the fence of the army base, around 30 meters away from the entrance to the sealed cave, that people gather at to pray. The best time to visit this location is Sunday mornings when the army base is relatively quiet.

Hillula of Rava Local residents of the area created a Hillula for Abaya and Rava which they celebrate on the 28th of Iyyar.;
