Rabbi Yannai North, Alma

Rabbi Yannai was a first generation Eretz Yisroel Amora. He was a student of Rebbe Yehuda Hanasi and Rebbe Chiya. Rabbi Yannai was a cohen. He is buried in Achbara.

Rabbi Yannai Rabbi Yannai is buried in the Arab occupied village of Achbara in Northern Israel.

Rabbi Yannai was student of Rebbe Yehuda Hanasi. When Rebbe passed away, Rabbi Yannai announced that the laws of priesthood preventing Kohanim from coming in contact with the dead did not apply regarding Rebbe. Despite being a kohen himself, he took part in the funeral. Once a peddler traveled from town to town announcing that he was selling the 'potion of life'. When Rabbi Yannai asked to purchase the potion, the peddler replied that it was not necessary for men of Rabbi Yannai's stature. Rabbi Yannai insisted and the peddler pulled out a book of Tehilim opening to the verse of "Who is the man who wants life, who loves days of seeing good? Guard your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from speaking deceit." Rebbe Yannai responded, "All my life, I read this pasuk and I did not realize how simple its meaning was until this peddler came along and taught me who the man is who desires life!"
