Yad Vashem | Explore Israel

In 1953 the Knesset passed a law to commemorate the six million Jews killed in the Shoah. Thus Yad Vashem, by far the largest Holocaust museum in the world, was established. This museum is seriously one of the the must see stops in Jerusalem. Every detail of the museum, from it’s archeology, the gardens, even the directions the windows are facing, has intention and meaning.

You can walk through the museum itself and be blown away. But it is highly (!!!) recommended that you do this with a tour. You do need to register in advance, and the tour takes about 3 hours. But it’s worth it. The tour guides, some of whom are holocaust survivors themselves, will point out the details that you will miss if you go through the museum on your own.

The main museum has approximately 100 screens showing video presentations, testimonies and original film clips. There are also hundreds of works of art, photographs and original documents about the Jewish communities of Europe that were destroyed by the Nazis. There is a children’s memorial, the hall of remembrance, a learning center, a shul and many temporary exhibits.

Children under the age of 10 are not permitted in the museum.

Underground parking is available for private visitors. The parking facility is located at the entrance to Yad vashem, adjacent to the main traffic circle.
