The gravesite of Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon - the Rambam - has become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in Israel. The Rambam lived in the 11th century. He was a rabbi, a writer and a physician to the Sultan. He was also the leader of the Cairo Jewish community. He wrote the philosophical work “Guide to the Perplexed” in which he addressed the major question of Judaism. By far his most famous work was “Mishna Torah” the first ever collection of Jewish Law to be codified in a single place. Today when you visit the grave in Tiberias, you will see seven columns leading up the grave, each inscribed with the name of one volume of the Mishna Torah. There is also a structure on top, meant to look like a crown to symbolize the esteem in which the Rambam is held. Ironically, the Rambam himself was against people visiting graves of sages, saying that the writing of sages served as their memorial. Nevertheless, his grave is the most visited place in Tiberias, and thousands make their way there every year.
